HYPERPIGMENTATION

Hyperpigmentation is a skin disorder that can consist in localised dark spots caused by melanin concentration resulting in an uneven skin tone.(1) Many factors can be responsible for an increase in melanin.(2)

Hormones | Genes | UV exposure | Drugs | Infections or inflammatory processes

Hyperpigmentation is a broad term that refers to a skin condition in which the skin is darkened and can be brought on by many different factors.

Post-blemish scarring, freckles that expanded into full-blown sunspots from excess exposure, age spots usually all fall under the umbrella of hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation may be localised, as in the case of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or melasma, or more diffuse in its presentation. Diffuse hyperpigmentation tends to be associated with metabolic causes, certain medications, malignancy, or autoimmune or infectious etiologies.(3)

HYPERPIGMENTATION TREATMENT

The most common hyperpigmentation treatments usually include topical creams that lighten the skin or procedures like chemical peels and mechanical or physical peels.(4)

Still, concomitant use of various topical therapies with different mechanisms of action are preferred to monotherapy.

Treatment efficacy can vary due to several factors including variability in clinical presentation and response to treatment amongst different genders, skin phototype and ethnicities.

To prevent hyperpigmentation, or to stop it becoming more prominent is crucial to:

  • Use clinically proven specific treatment.
  • Avoid picking at spots, scabs, and acne to prevent hyperpigmentation from forming after an injury.
  • Avoid exposure to the sun and use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect the skin.(3)
